I’m not Mexican, so I don’t celebrate Cinco de Mayo. I’m not Irish, so I don’t celebrate St. Patty’s day. Yet, these days and others like them seem to have taken over and become far greater than the original intent. Why?

Is it nothing more than a dumbass excuse to go and get wasted?

Because cultural appropriation that includes excuses for people to binge drink is a good enough excuse for really really poor minded individuals.

I celebrate St. Patrick’s Day because I’m British and so was St. Patrick.

Sure St. George is the patron saint of England but he never came to England where St. Patrick is believed to of been born not far from me and his grand father from what is now the middle of Cumbria.

So I celebrate because his grand father was a Cummerlan, St. Patrick was from Romano Britain and I love Irish drinks.

Oh and it’s a good an excuse as any to get wasted. Sláinte.

St. Patty’s day seems popular (a) wherever there are a lot of people of recent Irish descent or (b) in college towns. I imagine South Bend, Indiana is pretty crazy about it. I’m in neither camp...it just comes and goes without notice around here, except for the occasional sports bar luring people in. Also, I don’t drink any beers so light that they would accept green food coloring without turning a horrible brown color :D

Because my heritage is 75% Irish (25% Scottish).

The Irish used to be treated like trash in the United States and it’s fantastic that we can now have a day to celebrate our heritage as opposed to hiding it.

There was once a time during the Great Irish Immigration that despite the insane and terrible racism towards blacks, they were respected and paid more money than Irish Immigrants.

It tends to piss me off that it’s a day of binge drinking and not a day to celebrate Irish Heritage.

But I WILL be drinking some Irish Whiskey tonight, that’s for sure.

As a kid of Irish descent, born in Chicago to an alum of Notre Dame and then spending time in Boston it bugs me to see a day of heritage pride turn into a drunk fest. But we minimize the significance of every holiday we can, be it as important as Christmas or minimal (to Americans) as Cinco de Mayo.

Living in NJ now, it really upset me at my local St Patrick’s parade to see the “I’m not Irish, but I’m hammered and my kids are here for the candy” crowd. I don’t go to Columbus day parades, or the Puerto Rican parades, etc. (at all) but especially not inebriated and with my kids shoving other kids to get to the candy being tossed from floats.

We won’t go down the path discussing the cultural issues that the Irish have long faced, globally, and the treatment of them when they arrived in droves to America. Mostly because it’s hard to separate fact from fiction, but also because the story has been lost among green beer and ridiculous hats.

St Patrick’s Day is about drinking now, because that’s all the Irish are worth, haha. ( I laugh because I would cry otherwise)

Pretty much. Its an excuse to walk up at 6am and start drinking. As American's we're always looking for a good excuse to day drink.

Yes. I have a co-worker, who doesn’t have a Irish bone in his body, take off work today/tomorrow so he can go to the bar down the street from 8am to I’m an alcoholic and drink himself stupid.

I think you’re reading a bit too deep. You don’t celebrate, that’s fine. Don’t try to understand the actions of others based on your own behavior.

Very simple, people just look for any excuse to consume mass quantities of alcohol and eat bar foods. Also, St. Patty’s day is so different than any other day at a bar...because there was green beer which totally changed the experience.

Note: I actually greatly enjoy the bar foods though
